According to The Athletic, the 11 US host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are demanding millions of dollars from FIFA, as these cities believe that the "legacy contribution" funds previously promised by FIFA have not yet been received.

The report states that before the FIFA World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had promised that all US cities hosting matches would receive $1 million in financial support. However, these cities have not yet received the relevant payments.

This dispute can be traced back to the 2025 Club World Cup. At that time, FIFA had made similar promises. The relevant cities then inquired whether this "legacy contribution" would also apply to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the highest level of football event globally. However, Infantino has never publicly announced the specific payment arrangements for these funds.

It is understood that the heads of the organizing committees for the 11 US host cities of the FIFA World Cup – Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, Miami, and Boston – are currently confused by FIFA's delay in advancing the payment process.

These cities believe that $11 million is a small amount compared to the estimated $15 billion in revenue that the FIFA World Cup is expected to generate. The host cities not only help FIFA generate revenue but also provide a large amount of support and resources for the event, and therefore hope that the relevant commitments can be fulfilled as soon as possible.
