Match Report

The Canada international opened the scoring before teeing up Lee Kang-in after the break, and though Robin Le Normand and Alex Baena also netted for Atleti, Osasuna goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez saved his side from an embarrassing scoreline.

Atleti were on the front foot in the first half, with Ademola Lookman heading over from Lee's whipped cross before the latter saw a close-range attempt expertly turned wide by Fernandez inside the opening 12 minutes.

Diego Simeone's side continued to knock on the door and were ahead after 24 minutes, with David scoring on the rebound after his initial effort from Alejandro Grimaldo's cut-back was saved by the goalkeeper.

Fernandez pulled off an incredible double save to deny Lee and then David on the follow-up, but the Osasuna captain could do nothing to keep out the South Korean's driven effort nine minutes into the second half.

And the third followed shortly after; Fernandez tipped Cristian Romero's piledriver over the bar, but Le Normand scored from the resulting corner as his deflected strike flew into the top-right corner.

The Osasuna shot-stopper still had work to do as Atleti pushed for more goals, going full stretch to stop Lee's curler from distance, but the hosts scored a fourth in the 82nd minute as Johnny Cardoso's brilliant pass in behind the defence was tucked home by Baena.

David capitalises on Alvarez and Sorloth absences

Simeone previously reiterated his longing for Alexander Sorloth's return from injury, but with Julian Alvarez also sidelined at the moment, David took his chance to prove his worth as the starting striker.

Along with his goal and assist, David recorded the joint-most shots (six) and touches in the box (eight), while creating the second-most chances (four) and winning three of his four duels.

The 26-year-old is the first Atleti player this century to score in each of their first two LaLiga matches, while Simeone will also be delighted with the dominance his side showed from start to finish.

Atleti produced 3.99 expected goals (xG) from 27 shots, with 3.15 of their tally coming in the first half alone, while restricting Osasuna to 0.48 expected goals from just three attempts. Fernandez also made seven saves for the visitors, preventing an even more resounding defeat.

Atleti will now face rivals Real Madrid before the international break, and their confidence will be sky-high following this performance.
