Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports that even if Man City's stripped medals were redistributed to runners-up, such an action would be meaningless.

Carragher believes that after Man City was found guilty on most of the 115 financial charges, awarding their title medals to runners-up would be a hollow gesture to the players involved.

Reports last Friday indicated that all but one of the charges brought against Man City had been upheld. The charges alleged that Man City's Abu Dhabi owners breached Premier League rules by artificially inflating commercial revenue between 2009 and 2018.

The Premier League confirmed the accuracy of these reports on Tuesday, revealing that Man City's owners pumped nearly £900 million into the club's accounts over nine years, an action "clearly designed to circumvent Premier League rules."

These funds helped Man City rapidly build their squad, bringing some of the era's most exceptional players to the Etihad Stadium. During the period in which Man City breached the rules, they won a total of seven titles, including three Premier League championships.

Since the initial reports last Friday, there have been discussions about the possibility of stripping Man City of titles won during this period. If this happens, Liverpool could be awarded the 2013/14 Premier League title and the 2016 League Cup. However, Carragher does not believe such an action would have any real meaning for the players who would receive replacement medals.

Carragher said: "Perhaps I'm the only one who didn't receive a medal, it seems that way. I think I was right on the edge of it. But regarding medals, I think Man City's medals and titles won during this time should be erased from their record. That's my opinion.

"Whether other clubs should receive those titles, I think that's a different debate. But what Man City has done, it hasn't just affected their players, because now no one will look at their titles and medals the same way, and they never will. But for the players we're talking about, who would receive replacement medals... I was fortunate to win some medals, but I never look at them years later.

"What really happens is, your mind goes back to those moments, and your heart sinks, thinking about the final whistle in a big match. I think about Jerzy Dudek saving those penalties in the 2005 Champions League final, and that feeling. Man City players will never have that feeling again, and that's what Man City took from them.

"I don't think any player would care if you gave them a medal and put it in their trophy cabinet or heritage room. They would never look at it again, and they would never get that feeling or memory back.

"So I don't think those players receiving medals would make any difference, because they've lost that moment.

"When players win titles, no one remembers the medal itself; they remember the feeling; what you did, where you were, who you celebrated with that night after the match with friends.

"As I said, the final whistle, someone scoring a brilliant goal – these are emotions you can't explain, and that's the most special part of being a player.

"So whether you hand back titles or medals or not, it's meaningless. They've lost that feeling. And not just the players, but the fans too.

"So whether you're a Liverpool fan, a Manchester United fan, or a fan of the other teams that competed in those cups and finals, you've lost that moment, something you'll remember for life: what happened, those stories, those memories.

"It's not about the medal; it's about the feeling, and that's what Man City took away."

Man City's next match will be away at Liverpool on October 11 at Anfield, where the atmosphere is expected to be extremely tense. Enzo Maresca's league leaders will hope to end Andoni Iraola's unbeaten run at Merseyside, but Carragher believes Man City's actions have made many people angry.

The former Liverpool player, who made 737 appearances for the club, added: "One of the biggest issues with what Man City has done is that the Premier League is broadcast worldwide, and it's one of the greatest success stories in this country.

"The whole world follows the Premier League, and the whole world loves the Premier League, and I think that's why everyone is so angry about what Man City has done over the past 10 years.

"But football is never short of drama, and that's what makes it special. So Man City is coming to Anfield, and Liverpool could be the biggest losers in this entire story – if you think about Jürgen Klopp's team, missing out on some league titles, perhaps even the chance to be unbeaten champions (2018/19 season), and then witnessing Man City play at Anfield for the first time, the atmosphere will certainly be as intense as ever.

"Over the past five, six, seven years, matches between Man City and Liverpool have been the focal point of the Premier League, and they still are. Even more so now, with this match taking place at Anfield, so the drama and atmosphere will be even more tense.

"I don't think Liverpool fans will be polite; they will certainly let their Manchester rivals know how they feel. We'll all be watching."
