On October 1, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) issued its first official statement following the death of a football fan in chaotic scenes at the National Sports Stadium on Monday.

The tragedy reportedly occurred at Zimbabwe's National Sports Stadium Gate 2, where a large crowd of fans surged toward the venue in an attempt to enter and watch the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 Group E qualifier between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A Zimbabwe Republic Police vehicle was also reportedly involved in the incident that triggered the stampede.
ZIFA confirmed the death in a statement released on Tuesday, expressing condolences to the victim's family and wishing all injured fans a swift recovery.
"The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is saddened by the unfortunate death of a football fan following an incident at the National Sports Stadium during the match between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, September 28, 2026," ZIFA stated.
The association added, "On behalf of the Executive Committee, players, technical team, and the entire football family, we extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We also wish all injured fans a full and swift recovery."
ZIFA stated that it is currently cooperating with the police and other relevant authorities to determine the specific cause of the fatal incident.
The statement read, "ZIFA is working closely with all stakeholders and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the incident at Gate 2 and to address related safety concerns. The association will support due legal processes to ensure justice is served."
ZIFA further emphasized that the safety of spectators during football matches remains its top priority and announced a comprehensive review of matchday operations and organization.
"The safety and well-being of all participants at football matches is always our paramount concern. ZIFA is reviewing matchday operations with relevant authorities and stadium operators to identify any shortcomings and further enhance security measures to protect everyone in attendance," ZIFA said.
The association concluded, "Our thoughts remain with the bereaved family, the injured fans, and all those affected by this tragic event."
This is reportedly not the first serious fan safety incident at Zimbabwe's National Sports Stadium. A fan stampede also occurred at the venue in 2019. It is worth noting that Zimbabwe is currently bidding to co-host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations with South Africa and other countries.
