Former German national team player and Sky Germany analyst Dietmar Hamann has commented on Ronaldo's departure from the Portuguese national team, sharing his views on Ronaldo's role as a starter in the three most recent major tournaments, his effectiveness as a substitute, and his future with the team.

Hamann stated: "In my opinion, if Ronaldo hadn't been a starter, Portugal would have had a better chance of winning titles in the three most recent major tournaments. When a player misses the opportunity to step aside or voluntarily give up his place, someone else has to make that decision for him. The head coach has now made that decision. I believe this decision should have been made long ago. I'm convinced he shouldn't have been a starter in the two most recent World Cups and the previous European Championship.

I think Portugal could have performed better, and so could he. Because for Ronaldo at 37, or two years ago at 39, or now at 40 or 41, coming off the bench after 70 minutes against a somewhat tired and exhausted defense would certainly be easier. I believe if he were used in this way, he could still play a significant role for the team.

People couldn't make him understand this, and he didn't see it himself. So seeing things end this way, or perhaps end this way, is almost heartbreaking. Maybe he'll come back.

As I said, when someone misses the time to voluntarily step aside, others have to make that decision for him. In my view, this decision should have been made long ago, because I'm convinced he shouldn't have been a starter in the three most recent major tournaments, including the two most recent World Cups. If he hadn't been a starter, Portugal might have won titles in all three of these tournaments, and I wouldn't be surprised. But in reality, that didn't happen.

He can no longer consistently help the team for the full 90 minutes. So in my opinion, everything that's happening now should have happened long ago."
