On the podcast "Tippy Tappy Football," former England manager Sam Allardyce discussed the previous conflict between Ronaldo and Fernando Santos.

Allardyce believes that, despite the tough approach, Santos was right to end Ronaldo's cycle with the national team.
"Someone was going to have to cut the umbilical cord eventually," Allardyce explained.
"Santos has never minced his words. If you look at his coaching history and what he's done in Portuguese football, he's quite an old-school guy. Sooner or later, you're going to have to drop a player from the squad. You have to sit him down in the office and tell him directly."
Allardyce believes that Ronaldo needs to "think less about himself."
Allardyce said: "He's one of the greatest players we've ever seen, and there aren't many players who have shown his level of commitment. But at the end of the day, you should think about the team, not just yourself. It's not easy. The coach had the courage to say, 'You're not playing anymore.'"
