At 23:30 tomorrow evening (CET), Liverpool will host Man City in the Round of 16 of the Premier League. Ahead of the match, Iraola gave an exclusive interview to Sky Sports. In the first part of the interview (which we've divided into three parts due to length), he shared his thoughts on Man City.

Let's talk about what's happened over the past few weeks. Everyone knows about the controversy surrounding Man City. I'd like to ask: how do you think these events will affect this weekend's match?
I believe for us, our core work won't be affected much. We focus on football itself. Of course, we're aware there's a lot of external discussion around this match and the questions you're about to ask. But we just need to do our job well and concentrate on the match. This match has always been intense, and we've prepared for it.
So does that mean you and the players need to actively block out this external noise?
It's not about blocking out noise. We need to focus on playing a great match, giving the fans an exciting contest and an ideal result. Liverpool vs Man City has always been a top-level battle; in recent years, every encounter between the two teams is a focal point. The competition and intensity on the pitch are enough to capture our full attention.
Do you think this off-field controversy will heighten the atmosphere in the stadium?
To be honest, every time we play at Anfield, the atmosphere is always extremely passionate, especially in big matches, and Sunday will certainly be no different. I have no doubt the fans will stand behind the team. My job is to give the fans reasons to celebrate. We need everyone working together, and we need the fans' support.
Some former Liverpool managers have said that if they weren't Liverpool managers, they'd watch a match like Liverpool vs Man City no matter where they were. Do you feel that way?
Absolutely. This is a top-level encounter, and despite it being early in the season, people will follow this match. Not just because of various rumors off the pitch, but simply because it's Liverpool against Man City.
Man City currently has a perfect record in the Premier League. Given recent events, do you think this controversy will drive them, creating a survival mentality?
You should ask them that question. I can't answer for Man City.
But you must anticipate such a scenario, right?
My expectation of them is based on what they've shown this season. They're very strong, they have key leaders in the squad, and they've maintained a perfect record in the Premier League so far. I expect to face this Man City team, and they'll adapt based on each match, like any other team would.
In your view, what changes has Man City made compared to before? How does Maresca's coaching style differ from Guardiola's?
The differences are clear. We know Maresca quite well; we've seen his coaching at Leicester City and Chelsea and understand his tactical approach. I think the current Man City is a blend, somewhat similar to us: retaining the mature playing styles of the previous teams while incorporating new ideas brought by the new manager. They've had a very strong start to the season.
Let's talk about the squad situation. After the international break, Gakpo and Isak withdrew from their national teams due to injury. Jaquette has been training this week. What's the current status of these three players? How likely are they to play?
Here's roughly the situation: Jaquette trained yesterday, he's fine, and could play. I hope he'll be available. Gakpo and Isak haven't trained yet. You've seen the training footage; we released the training materials yesterday—there's nothing to hide.
There's no intentional secrecy.
Exactly (laughs). They couldn't train yesterday. There are still a few days until the match, but I think it will be very difficult for them to play.
