According to ANSA, former striker Carroll revealed in his autobiography "Owning It" that he was sexually assaulted in 2021. He also stated that other players, including well-known ones, had confided similar experiences to him, and he hopes to encourage more victims to find the courage to speak out.

Carroll said the incident occurred during his second spell at Newcastle United when he was assaulted while sleeping at home. The perpetrator was later identified as Kevin Adams, a 59-year-old dance instructor in the British entertainment industry.
In an interview promoting his new book, Carroll said: "Some people I know came to me and said they had experienced similar things. There are people in football too." When asked if it was a same-sex assault, the former international confirmed it and said that after the book was published, he received thank-you calls and hundreds of messages of support.
