On October 14 at 8 p.m. CET in the second group stage match of the Champions League, Viking drew 3-3 with Bayern Munich. After the match, Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany attended a press conference.

Part 2

You have extensive experience as both a player and a coach. Bayern Munich is a major club, while Viking are just beginning their journey in European competition. Do you have any advice for Viking as they start out in European football?

Vincent Kompany: I don't think they need to change much about what they did today. And it's not my responsibility to give them advice. They have a successful coaching team in place and they are doing well right now. I think they made the best use of the opportunities they had today. This is normally the kind of situation they will face in the Champions League.

As time passes and the team gains more experience in this competition—whether it's the group stage, knockout stages, or consecutive campaigns—they will eventually reach a new level. But at this stage, this is their first time facing matches like this. What they need to do is enjoy the process and create some memorable moments for their fans. Today's result is just the beginning, and I hope they can provide more such moments for their supporters in the future.

The game changed significantly after Michael Olise was substituted off. Sabiri came on as a substitute at halftime, and then you brought him off and introduced defender Ito. This left Bayern with only Harry Kane in attack. What was your thinking at that moment? Why did you make such a substitution?

Vincent Kompany: We've used this approach before, so it's not something new. We have a plan for every match and can adjust our attacking or defensive setup depending on the match situation. Sometimes we don't need to make such adjustments, but sometimes we do.

At that point, we had about ten minutes left in the match. The opposition is a very good team with solid set pieces and set-play execution. In that situation, I felt this setup was more appropriate. Yes, Alphonso Davies still has his pace—he's played on the wing before. So our aim wasn't just to tighten the defense. Alphonso still has his attacking threat, and Konrad Laimer has enough defensive capability to cover. That's why we hoped to win the match with this setup. We always have a plan for such situations. Generally, these kinds of adjustments work, but today the opposition executed their key chances very well in every detail.

You've mentioned before that Viking play very aggressively today, sometimes even recklessly. Do you feel they lost control or made things worse for themselves?

Vincent Kompany: No, no, no. Because we are familiar with such situations. Especially when playing away matches against Bayern Munich, opposing teams tend to view this as the most important match of their season. We are used to this, just as most teams handle it similarly.

However, I'm not satisfied with how we dealt with this situation. So I don't want to underestimate teams like Viking. They fought hard in the match and used the methods available to them. This is the reality of the match and a lesson for us going forward. We need to refocus.
