Atalanta’s Europa League campaign is in the balance, after they blew a 2-0 lead against FK Sarajevo.

The Orobici have to go through the qualifying rounds after Milan were reinstated to the competition, and faced the Bosnians at the Mapei Stadium tonight.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side dominated the first half, laying siege to the opposition goal in the opening stages.

They got their reward after 11 minutes, Federico Masiello flicking on a Papu Gomez corner which was converted by Rafael Toloi.

Young striker Musa Barrow was giving Sarajevo a torrid time, but couldn’t quite carve out a clear-cut chance.

Instead he laid one on for Gomez, but Bojan Pavlovic was off his line quickly to narrow the angle.

The goalkeeper against saved from the Orobici captain, but it looked to be game over and quite possibly tie over just before half-time.

It was almost a carbon copy of the first goal, with Gomez swinging in a free-kick, Toloi touching it on and young defender Gianluca Mancini turning it in.

On the evidence of the first half there was a clear gulf in class between the teams, but Atalanta somehow let it slip away.

With 20 minutes to play a good cross from the right by Joachim Adukor caught the Italian defence flat, and Haris Handzic beat Etrit Berisha from close range.

The same man was heavily involved in the second goal, causing panic in the Orobici defence and forcing a save from Berisha.

The goalkeeper could only beat it out, and Aladin Sisic caught Masiello and Mancini on their heels to equalise.

Despite over 20 shots in the game and seven minutes added time, the hosts could find a way through for a third time.

That result means Atalanta have to score in Bosnia in next week to have any chance of going through, thanks to Sarajevo’s two away goals.
