According to the Liverpool Echo, Steven Gerrard stated he wouldn't want to be invited back to Rangers, as it would likely mean the club is in trouble.

Gerrard enjoyed a very successful three-year spell in Scotland, leading Rangers to an undefeated league title in 2021, their first in 10 years. This was also Gerrard's first league title as a manager and prevented arch-rivals Celtic from winning 10 consecutive titles. Months later, he took over as Aston Villa manager, but his tenure in the Midlands, as well as his subsequent spell at Al-Ettifaq, ended prematurely.
Gerrard has not managed since January 2025, but he has not ruled out a return to coaching. When asked on the 'Open Goal' podcast if he would return to Rangers, Gerrard said, "Who knows? For a while now, I've been reluctant to sit in the stands wearing a suit, because I don't want to disrespect any current head coach.
"I have nothing but respect for Derek McInnes. When he was managing Aberdeen, he was one of the toughest challenges our coaching staff ever faced. I wish him all the best, and I hope the club continues to succeed so they might not need to call on someone like me.
"I follow Rangers, and I check their results; I love this club. I want McInnes to succeed, and I have nothing but respect for him. I was also happy to go to the game yesterday; I chatted with Andy Halliday and Scott Arfield in the stands.
"Watching another Old Firm derby, seeing all the scarves on the drive to the stadium, and being back at Ibrox felt great."
After defeating Celtic before the international break, Rangers are now just two points behind their rivals. This was Rangers' sixth consecutive victory, and the team's poor start to the season has quickly been forgotten, despite their elimination from the UEFA Europa Conference League by Czech team Jablonec.
With McInnes no longer facing the risk of being sacked, Gerrard doesn't have to worry about being asked to take over the team if he wants to attend a match. Currently, Gerrard is enjoying his television work and spending time with his family.
Gerrard added, "I'm happy right now. I'm doing television work for TNT, and I've signed a new contract. I also have some other work, including commercial partnerships.
"I became a grandfather a year ago. I'm enjoying spending time with my family and getting enough rest. I have a good work-life balance. I've received quite a few offers and have spoken with some teams, but right now, I'm really content with what I'm doing."
