Belgian international Amadou Onana underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery after an injury at the FIFA World Cup and will be sidelined for 9 months.

According to L'Équipe, citing information from AFP medical sources, Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana underwent surgery in Lyon on Tuesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is expected to be out for 9 months. The 24-year-old, who previously played for Hamburg (2020-2021), Lille (2021-2022), and Everton (2022-2024), will undergo rehabilitation training under the guidance of Villa's medical team after the surgery.

Onana (33 caps, 1 goal for the national team) left the field injured after only 20 minutes in Belgium's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against the United States on July 7 (4-1). At the time, former Belgium coach Rudi Garcia was concerned that "this is a serious injury." His fears ultimately came true. The surgery was performed by Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet at the Jean Mermoz Private Hospital in Lyon.
