Germany has been looking to appoint a foreign coach, and Volker Finke revealed in an interview with RTL/Sky that he recommended Pep Guardiola to the German Football Association (DFB).

Finke said he called DFB management director Andreas Rettig and urged him to act quickly. He stated: "Andreas, please act as fast as possible. Guardiola is currently available, and there are other foreign coaches out there too. Now is the time to bring in a coach who can introduce new ideas and philosophies to German football. We should definitely make this appointment now."

Finke said: "It strikes me as odd that no one considered different possibilities." While he believed at the time there was "only one direction without any other consideration," he added: "I think Klopp has achieved enough success to fully justify this decision. We can certainly view it positively."

Finke also suggested considering a coach from Mediterranean countries or another foreign manager. He explained: "Mediterranean football nations like Spain or France have spent decades or centuries developing their football philosophy. Football is played better there. If France and Spain hadn't practiced their distinct football philosophy, they wouldn't be as strong as they are today."
