Sky Sport Italia interviewed Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone ahead of Manchester United's second group stage match in the Champions League.

After an important victory against Alavés, we've had a sequence of important matches. This match comes after a long international break, a period you perhaps haven't experienced before. How did you manage the daily work? How did you maintain the systems and routines built during the summer preparation while reintegrating everything systematically? The team's performance has remained excellent since returning to the pitch, and we've seen that the positive momentum from before the break has been fully maintained.
It was genuinely difficult. The reason is that there were many international matches during that time. Players experienced long flights and international travel, and we only had two days to prepare our tactical plan for the Alavés match. Fortunately, we were able to keep five or six players who did targeted training sessions in the weeks before the break. Then we needed to integrate four international players who returned just before the match. We helped them understand our current tactical requirements. These four international players quickly and precisely grasped our tactical objectives. Fortunately, in the end we managed to play a good match with the entire team together.
Atlético Madrid appears to be in a state of continuous progress and change. There have been genuine important changes within the squad this summer. You are now in your 16th season as the club's manager. Last season, despite notable success in the cup competitions (Copa del Rey final and the latter stages of the Champions League), the season ended without satisfaction. However, everyone outside is enthusiastically discussing the new energy and dynamism in the dressing room. How challenging were your tactical adjustments and preseason preparations this summer? Do you think Atlético this season has achieved further progress and improvement?
In my view, the team is currently on an upward trajectory of growth. What I see is a team being renovated and rebuilt. During this summer's transfer window, we welcomed five new players and seven players left. We are gradually and methodically exploring how these new players can contribute to the team and what qualities they bring. All of this is for the overall benefit of the club. At the same time, these new players are gradually understanding, through daily training and matches, their responsibilities at Atlético, accepting the sacrifices and showing the mentality required. In summary, we are firmly moving forward along this path of progress and adjustment, and as always, we hope to ultimately achieve the various important strategic objectives set by the club.
Among these new players, Jonathan David has demonstrated genuine quality and technical ability in Serie A, though he hasn't always had consistent performances. However, since arriving at our club, he has made an excellent start. Was he a transfer target you've been monitoring for a long time? Did you bring him in because he perfectly fits your tactical system and style of play? What do you think are his key competitive strengths? Additionally, how satisfied and pleased are you with his performance and integration during his first weeks at Atlético?
To be honest, the impact he's had on the entire team has been very positive. In just four matches, he has effectively scored three goals and created one. He also showed excellent performance in the Alavés match. His playing style brings certain unique elements that we didn't have in our attack before. He is a forward who runs down the right flank, cuts inside to provide support, and is also strategically very committed to the defensive effort for the entire team's defense, making runs without the ball. During the past year, we closely studied his performances while he was at Juventus, and we thoroughly analyzed his previous performances when he played in France (Lille). His performance in Ligue 1 was excellent and he scored a considerable number of goals. When he first arrived at Atlético, I was clear and direct with him: "We don't want the version of you that struggled at Juventus; we want the excellent version of you that dominated the French league and reached a top club like Juventus." He needs to show his best performance. We will work together to help him rediscover and demonstrate the level of top striker that matters for the team.
